Vice President
My husband, Phil Johnson, and I moved to San Juan Island full-time in 2003 with our dog, Astro, and cat, Bond (James Bond, a stray who adopted me). I was soon swept into the activities of this thriving community, first serving on the board of the San Juan Islands Museum of Art and chairing the education committee to ensure the continuation of visual arts education in our schools. Serving on SJI Community Foundation board allowed me to assist many non-profit organizations to fulfill their missions. A major project, while serving on the SJICF board, was bringing Peace Island Medical Center to our island. My background in healthcare was a natural fit for serving on the PIMC board during those early transition years.
Phil and I enjoy sailing our boat, Moon Doggie, and soon joined the San Juan Island Yacht Club, where I was recruited to become a bridge officer. I served five years on the SJIYC board as fleet captain, rear commodore, vice commodore, commodore, and past commodore. I also co-chair the race committee, overseeing the annual Shaw Island Classic sailboat race. Rounding out my local non-profit experience, I have also served as secretary for the Mineral Point Community Club since 2008.
My career evolved in ways I never expected. An undergraduate degree in food technology and business (Iowa State University) and graduate degree in food science (University of Washington) led me to an early career in nutrition and dietetics. I soon discovered, however, that I enjoyed the business and marketing side of healthcare. While moving around the country I ran a wellness center, spent ten years with Abbott Laboratories in various positions, jumped to vice president of sales & marketing for a healthcare software development company and landed with a market research firm. I am currently vice president of JJG Research, LLC, a litigation market research firm. Phil and I also tend, lovingly, to a small organic farm on the island.
Animals have been part of my life since growing up on a farm in Iowa. I am a passionate advocate for the humane treatment of all animals. We have had the pleasure of seeing animals around the world living freely in their natural habitats. Rescue dogs, Howie & Bean brought much joy to our lives. We recently added a new doggie member to our family, Free Wheelin’ Dylan, a Brittany who lives up to his name! I was an early supporter of the PADS for Parkinson’s program and have been working with Dylan on nose work in hopes that he may someday join the dogs doing this valuable service.
APS-FH is a cornerstone organization in our community, and I hope to apply my experience with non-profits, business, and animals to supporting and expanding its many valuable services.
