Amy Lear Compassion of the Year Award
The Amy Lear Compassion in Action Volunteer of the Year Award was conceptualized in 2015, after board member and animal shelter supporter, Amy Lear passed away. Amy embodied compassion and kindness in everything she did, particularly in her work with The Animal Protection Society.
We are fortunate to have known and worked with Amy and are proud to remember her contributions each year when we honor a new Volunteer of the Year.
APS-FH Super Hero!
Mike LaLande, APS-FH 2018 Volunteer of the Year, and his wife April, became shelter family in 2014. Before becoming islanders, Mike and April owned a sales agency selling lawn and garden products to Costco, Amazon and other large retailers. Before their recent move to Arizona, they built a 5-Star Green house on San Juan Island and owned a 15-acre Eco-friendly horse/goat farm in North Bend, WA, voted by King County as “conservation farm of the year.”
Mike was chosen as our APS-FH 2018 Volunteer of the Year for the hundreds of hours he spent as the New Home New Hope’s Shelter Project Manager. He participated in every aspect of the project, from architectural design, planning committee, capital campaign fundraising committee permit process, excavation and construction.
