Providing compassionate care and brighter futures for homeless animals.

Search for your new friend here.

There are many places to acquire a dog or a cat, but our shelter provides adoption matchmaking services that help you find the right pet for your family and household. Before you adopt your companion animal from us, the Animal Protection Society will:

  • Treat the pet for internal and external parasites
  • Give them all initial vaccinations
  • Spay or neuter the pet
  • Test all cats for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Leukemia Virus (FeLV)

Beyond all that, animals at the shelter are lovingly cared for, socialized, and observed for all possible behavioral and health problems. We care about our friends, and it shows! Learn more.

How You Can Help

Donate

Outright donations help us feed and take care of the shelter pets. They also help us maintain our facilities and keep the lights on. Make a one-time donation or a monthly donation of any amount.

Volunteer

Volunteer opportunities are many, just to name a few: walking dogs, trapping feral cats, general shelter cleaning, medical clinic support, fostering pets, and volunteering at our Treasure Hounds store.

Treasure Hounds

Shopping at our upscale retail thrift store is another way to support us, so is donating gently used household furnishings, home goods & decor to Treasure Hounds.

~ PET OF THE WEEK ~

Dune

Age: ~3 years old

Sex: Male

Breed: Domestic Short Hair, Black

Origin: San Juan Island

Weight: 13.8 lbs

Personality: Brave, Chatty, Suave

Energy Level: Young guy whose energy easily matches his surroundings — from living outdoors, to a life inside, and anything in between!

Likes: Movie Nights, Smooth Jazz, WWE Wrestling

Dislikes: Spicy Foods, Stereotypes, Swans

Hello there, I’m Dune! My name was inspired by the vast and mysterious dune deserts of Arrakis, and it’s my hope that my blockbuster inspired name will stir up some excitement around me, thus helping me get adopted. Getting adopted isn’t easy for any animal these days, and the fact that I’m a black cat (the least likely to get adopted, and I’m one of 5 here at APS-FH alone) means the odds aren’t exactly in my favor. Luckily for me, I’m full of optimism, and I think there are a lot of things about me that would make me an excellent pet, and the best friend anyone could ever ask for.

Although the untrue black cat stereotypes may follow me around, anyone with a working pair of eyes can see that my black coat is sleek and beautiful! I’ve also gotten many compliments on my bright, piercing, yellow colored eyes, and on my chubby cheeks, which the ladies seem to love; although I’m happily neutered now, my years outside as a stray allowed me to develop those classic “tomcat cheeks”.

My striking outward appearance aside, underneath it all I’m just one gentle giant who is looking for a life of happy companionship with a person(s). You’ll realize quickly upon meeting me that I’m just a big lover who welcomes head-butts, kisses, and any affection you’re willing to give, except belly rubs, which I despise! I’ll happily return the favor and show you loads of affection, happily purring along the way. Aside from the rumble of my purr, you can also tell I’m comfortable with you when I begin talking; I’m quite the vocal guy, and would love to find an adopter who also enjoys the art of conversation.

Could you be the person(s) who proves me right for being so optimistic about my future, and takes me home for a life of love with you? If you’d like to visit me come by APS-FH during their open hours, and come meet me in Community Cat Room #3.

The Animal Protection Society - Friday Harbor proudly presents Debra Crain as the APS-FH Volunteer of the Month for April 2024.

Debra’s journey with APS-FH began over a year ago, where she stepped into the role of a dedicated volunteer, brining with her a wealth of experience and a heart full of compassion. Although Debra’s professional background as a registered nurse has equipped her with invaluable skills, she chose to take a hiatus from her career to immerse herself fully in her volunteer efforts.

Before joining APS-FH, Debra’s passion for serving communities led her to spend over a decade working on Indian reservations in the Southwest, where she made a profound impact by assisting people and rescuing dogs. Her commitment to animal welfare was further exemplified during her tenure at a reservation in the Pacific Northwest, where she played a pivotal role in establishing a spay and neuter clinic.

Despite her extensive history of helping dogs in recent years Debra has discovered a newfound love for cats, particularly black cats. Currently Debra doesn’t have any cats of her won but she finds fulfillment in caring for shelter cats, nurturing them with the same love and dedication that she would show her own pets.

Beyond her volunteer work, Debra’s talents extend into the realm of alternative medicine as a Medical Intuitive. With her intuitive abilities, she provides invaluable insights into the physical and emotional well-being of animals, offering guidance and support to pets and owners alike.

The APS-FH team has been deeply moved by the profound bond Debra has formed with one of our elderly cats, Aya. Upon meeting Aya, who was initially struggling with health issues, Debra felt an immediate connection and sense of responsibility towards her. This led her to visit Aya every single day for two consecutive weeks, tirelessly ensuring her comfort and well being. Aya’s health has significantly improved and we’re sure Debra’s compassion and attention helped her to get through her rough spell. Despite this positive progress, Debra continues to visit Aya regularly, demonstrating her unwavering commitment and affection towards her furry friend.

In addition to her volunteer work, Debra’s presence brings a sense of calm and sincerity to every interaction, enriching the lives of both animals and humans alike. Her commitment to APS-FH’s mission and her selfless contributions make her an invaluable asset to our organization.

Thank you, Debra, for your tireless dedication and compassionate heart. You are truly an inspiration, and we are incredibly grateful to have you as a part of our APS-FH family. Congratulations on being named Volunteer of the Month!
